David Karp Asks Can He Use the Word “nigga”…
Can I use the word “nigga” if I’m quoting a song? Specifically, the extremely common gesture of sharing lyrics on a blog or profile.
I imagine nobody would suggest it’s offensive for a white person to share the recording (perhaps excluding the RIAA), but printing the word felt different enough to make me hesitate when making a post earlier. Just curious.
Is this is what all the uproar and outrage is about? Apparently A LOT of black people (and even some whites) are accusing David Karp of being ignorant, disrespectful and racist because of this question *re-reads entire post* …maybe I’m missing something. Either I’m too ignorant to see what the problem is. Or maybe you all (whoever finds his question racist, offensive or ignorant) are to ignorant yourselves to see this as a bold yet noble gesture. As a people we have all these unspoken rules about using “the n-word” and we just expects every non-black to just know all the do’s and don’t’s in regards to it’s use. That’s not how it works. He could just be ignorant and choose to use it how he sees fit or he can ask a question to be informed. It’s a serious and legitimate question the deserves to be asked and answered. No one runs the show. If black people want to be in charge of the word nigga and demand that no one outside of the race use it, then at least be ready to be asked “why?” and have a dxmn good answer to follow up. Period.
For the record, my take on it is this: If niggas want non-blacks to stop using the word nigga then stop using the word in music. Otherwise, get over it. I generally don’t defend the use of the word nigga by non-blacks because I know it’s a very touchy subject and personally, it rubs me the wrong way. Also, in the spirit of fairness and understanding, I also make it a point to try to explain to my non-black friends why it can come off as offensive and out of line. BUT! ..if they’re saying it in reference to the title of a song or song lyrics, you can’t hold them. Music transcends cultures and creates new cultures in and of itself. What artist say and do effect society to a large extent. It’s very evident in sports, fashion and language. Be accountable. Don’t create a world that you don’t want to live in.
And seriously, what do you want white people to say in place of “the n-word” in “Niggas in Paris”? When they’re at their favorite rappers’ concert, the one that they paid hundreds of dollars to attend, and a little more to buy their songs and CDs… when they’re at that concert, and said favorite rapper tells them to “say it with me!” What are they supposed to do the tens of times nigga comes up?
I need answers. Realistic ones. Don’t worry, i’ll wait.
Maybe… Idk, just a suggestion… maybe white people just shouldn’t like or listen to “black music” or black artist… huh? (-_-)
